Viking Aronia Berry

$10.00

Aronia melanocarpa. The king of the antioxidant berries, Aronia or chokeberry is a magical plant, and we’d argue that Viking is the king of the kings when it comes to fast growth and berry production. If you’re looking for a berry to fill your kitchen with jams, desserts, dried fruits and even wine, this is your berry!

Our bushes easily produce 5 gallons of berries per bush with left overs for the birds and they’ve been big producers since their 3rd year in the ground. These plants are grown from cuttings of our mother plants, so they are true to type and should be as productive.

These bushes love the sun and manage well even on low water rations. We mulch heavily with sawdust, leaves and clean straw (be careful where you get your straw!) to help them hold that moisture during the long hot summer months. Plants produce prolific clusters of white blossoms in spring attractive e to all the pollinators, then form berries and are ready for picking in late summer.

After the second year, begin an annual mid winter pruning program to increase production, airflow and health of the bushes. You can take hardwood cuttings then as well, but cuttings do much better if taken as softwood cuttings in the fast growth period of early summer.

These bushes will be 4-6 feet tall at maturity and just as wide.
They make a great dense hedge or outer border row in a garden. Foliage turns a stunning bight red in fall. Handsome, productive and super easy to maintain, these are true all-stars in the homestead garden.
