Jefferson Hazelnut
$10.00 – $80.00
Jefferson hazelnut trees are Eastern Filbert Blight resistant and produce a heavy yield of large tasty nuts. They do need a pollinizer, so remember to order another variety when you order these (e.g. Yamhill, or Eta). To take advantage of their extra long bloom time, you may want to have several different pollinizers covering the entire period of their bloom time. Good choices are Yamhill or York for the early part and Eta or Theta for the later part. These trees make an excellent economical choice for backyard orchards, homesteads, edible landscape and wildlife habitat plantings.
Options Available for Sale
Our Jefferson hazelnut 1-year seedlings were grown from nuts and while these will not give exact reproduction of Jefferson qualities (somewhat variable in nut size and yield), they will still be of superior quality compared to other seedlings due to their genetics. Hazelnut seedling trees will bear in 3-6 years.
The 1-year tie-off propagated trees will give you the exact reproduction of Jefferson qualities, and are also much larger in size and caliper than the seedlings. Most are 3 to 4 feet long, 3/8″ to 1/2″ in caliper and have strong roots. These trees were grown by tie-off layering of suckers, and will typically begin bearing nuts in 2-3 years.
Due to their length, we will cut them back to about 3 feet when shipped, which will not impact their ability to quickly grow to a healthy nut-bearing tree. If you choose local pickup they will not be trimmed.
