Szego Chestnut

(Castanea spp., possibly crenata/pumila x mollisima) This is an exceptional cultivar that produces large nuts of good sweet flavor. Its nuts are uniform in size, peel well, and store well. Szego is a good pollen producer. The tree grows vigorously. It is root rot resistant and appears to be blight resistant too. Easy to graft.
Szego is a complex hybrid, likely a mix of Japanese and Chinese chestnut, and Allegheny Chinquapin. It was grown by James Nave and named after the late Al Szego. We became aware of this wonderful cultivar thanks to James Nave who gets credit for most of the information we provide here.
