Cornus sericea. This striking multi-stemmed Pacific Northwest native with deep red stems and creamy yellow-whites clusters of blossoms in spring is a fast growing trouble free addition to borders, in front of evergreens or along the edges of paths in the garden landscape. The bright red stems are very showy in winter against evergreens, snowy slopes or embankments. You may even notice they are being employed along roadways and in many municipalities in this way in recent years.
A strong growing shrub tolerant of many diverse soil types and climate conditions, including mild summer drought and heavy clay. this plant is native throughout most of the continental US right up into Alaska. It is an important plant for many waterfowl, small mammals and deer as well as attracting butterflies, pollinators and song birds who dine on its flowers and autumn fruits.
