Monkey Puzzle Tree
$20.00
Araucaria araucana. This southern hemisphere conifer is the national tree of Chile, has large thick triangular leaves and large edible seeds. The seeds or pine nuts of the Monkey Puzzle tree are 1 to 2 inches long.
Considered sacred by the Arauco Indians for whom the seeds were a major food source, the tree grows to heights of 130 feet with 7 to 10 foot diameter trunks in its native habitat.
Now classified as endangered, Monkey Puzzle trees are protected in Chile.
The trees do not grow as large in cultivation as in their natural habitat, usually reaching only half the size of the native specimens, however they do grow large and have large surface roots which need adequate space.
Full sun, medium watering (do not overwater) these trees thrive in cool marine climates, making them quite well adapted to the Pacific Northwest.
