(Castanea sativa x crenata) The Maraval Chestnut is another excellent Sativa/Crenata (European/Japanese) hybrid cross. This natural named hybrid, cross from France in 1986 is a self fertile, large and moderately vigorous, early bearing tree with large and excellent flavored nuts held in a thin easy peel pellicle.
It is reportedly resistant to ink disease, phytophthora root rot, leaf rust and blight.
Maraval is grown at 800 to 10,000 feet altitude in the warmer regions of France.
An early to mid season hybrid, Maraval is moderately vigorous and dense, making it a good orchard tree for denser plantings.
Maraval blooms in early to mid season (June/July) and produces its large thin shelled harvest in mid season(late September/early October). The early blooming time can make it susceptible to cooler climates with late frosts.
Outside the orchard, this is a large tree with wide spread, but can be trimmed for denser orchard planting. Planted in isolation it can grow to 40 to 65 feet in height and 25 to 50 feet across.
Maraval’s good graft compatibility makes it an excellent root stock for Bouche de Betizac and Precoce Migoule as well as for direct grafting Maraval scion wood.
Hardy to -15°F.
