Precoce Migoule Chestnut
$10.00 – $30.00
This natural cross of the European chestnut (Castanea sativa) and a Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata) discovered by J. Dufrenoy in a Migule orchard in Brive-la-Gaillarde. In France.
The excellent early ripening nut makes a great choice for cooler northern climates where it will ripen dependably before a frost. Blooms are also early and slightly frost sensitive but nuts alsof form on secondary buds.
The large nuts store well, are good to excellent flavor, easy peeling and drop in mid to late September and early October without the burr.
Trees are vigorous growers, gaining 3 to 5 feet per season and producing nuts in years 3 to 5 with full nut production by year 12 to 20 depending on conditions. These are large trees, growing to 60 feet if conditions are right with a spread up to 30 feet.
An excellent fresh nut variety, this tree will produce dependable early crops and provide excellent pollination for any castanea sativa (european and european cross) chestnuts, including Colossal. Pollinators for this tree include Bisalta #3, Belle Epine, Bournette, Ginyose, Marigoule, Marsol, Tsukuba, and Vignols.
