Juglans cinera. White walnuts – native to eastern US and Canada. They grow to 60 feet and related to the American Black Walnut.
The butternut is a delicious buttery nut from the hardiest trees of the walnut family. Fast growing, with thick shelled nuts (don’t let that fool you, they are easy to open and delicious) these trees are susceptible to a fungal canker in their native regions and cannot be shipped to some eastern locations.
A beautiful large tree with heart shaped nuts, the butternut is a buttery rich nut from a truly exceptional tree.
Our butternut seeds come from Burnt Ridge Nursery in Washington which has this page telling the amazing historical story of their butternut seedlings and nuts on their site.
Trust us, it has nothing to do with the US president, but a lot to do with real American history and the incredible spirit of early Americans. You will be so happy to have read it and to have learned about the legacy of our west coast butternuts.
USDA regulations prohibit shipping of Juglans species to the following states: AR, AZ, CA, IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MO, MS, NE, TX, and WV.
