Gooseberry Bushes
Gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa). This relative of the currant is high in antioxidants and Vitamin C, and delicious eaten fresh, in jams and pies. They are also distinguished among berries for making an excellent wine.
A vigorous easy-to-grow berry, gooseberries will provide large harvests soon after planting. Like most berries, they prefer well-drained soil and do well in morning sun and afternoon shade. Gooseberries are a very popular fruit in Britain where growers famously competed for the largest (goose-egg sized!) berries in the mid 19th and early 20th century. Though not as popular in the United States, they are becoming more popular as more gardeners discover how easy they are to grow and how much fruit they produce.
USDA regulations prohibit shipping of Ribes species to the following states: DE, MA, ME, MI, NC, NH, NJ, OH, RI, VA, and WV.
